Trouble shooting information for printer problems: ================================================== Once a viable connection has been established with the printer, there may still be problems when printing PostScript files calling for fonts in Adobe Type 1 format, particularly those used with TeX (Computer Modern, LaTeX, SliTeX, AMS Euler, Symbol & Cyrillic fonts, LucidaBright + LucidaNewMath etc). This `readme.txt' file and the PostScript files in this directory are designed to help with such problems. The error handler `ehandler.ps': ================================ This subdirectory contains files useful for trouble-shooting printer problems. First of all, please download the error handler, `ehandler.ps' to the printer (or other PostScript interpreter). This will provide useful diagnostic information should one of the tests fail. The error handler can be downloaded as follows: copy b:\ps\ehandler.ps LPT1:/b In this incantation, substitute the directory where you keep the error handler for `b:\ps'. Also substitute the correct port for your printer (AUX, COM1, ... COM4, PRN, LPT1 ... LPT3). If you have a printer on a serial line WITHOUT hardware handshaking, use the utility program SERIAL instead to send `ehandler.ps' to the printer. Any error condition will cause the partially rendered page to be shown, along with details about the state of the PostScript interpreter at the time the error occured, as well as information on where in the PostScript file the error occured. (Note, the error handler assumes the PostScript interpreter sets up the error information as specified --- some clones do not, and the output from the error handler will be less useful in that case). PostScript interpreter test files: ================================== There are nine PS test files provided in this directory. Send the test files to the printer - in increasing numerical order. The test files present increasingly more challenging material to the PostScript interpreter. For detailed information see the start of each test file. A properly designed PostScript interpreter should handle all nine test files without error, as do all true Adobe interpreters. --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- printtst1.ps This is a very simple test just to establish that files can be sent to the printer, and that they are received by the printer. If this doesn't work, suspect the cables, the baud rate setting when using a serial connection, or perhaps problems with handshaking (hardware versus software). printst2.ps is a test of rendering using a printer resident font (Times-Roman). A different font (Courier) may be used if the printer does not have Times-Roman built-in. printst3.ps is a test of the interpreter's ability to read `eexec' encrypted material. This is required for reading Type 1 outline font programs and for dealing with the preambles used by DVIPSONE and utilities supplied with DVIPSONE. printst4.ps is a test of the ability to render very simple Type 1 fonts. The font is `plain vanilla' and has no features that should trigger known `clone' interpreter bugs. printst5.ps is a test of the ability to deal with several different Type 1 fonts and perform correct positioning on the page. printst6.ps is a test of the interpreter with a font that is somewhat more sophisticated. A very small number of `clone' interpreters fail this test. If your interpreter is one of these, ask us about `greatly simplified' fonts. printst7.ps is a test using an even more sophisticated Type 1 font. Several `clone' interpreters fail this test. If your interpreter fails this test, ask us about `simplified' fonts. printst8.ps is a test of the ability to deal with several different sophisticated Type 1 fonts in a page of mathematical text. printst9.ps is a test of the ability to render simple (scaled) Type 3 bitmapped fonts. Some `clone' interpreters will fail this test.
